Amongst our resident birds are many species of pheasant, some of which are endangered in the wild and which breed at Sewerby.
Some of these rank amongst the most stunning birds in the world and include the Indian Blue Peafowl, Golden Pheasant and Temminck's Tragopan.
Our walk-through aviary gives visitors a wonderful close-up view of some of our other birds including the beautiful Mandarin Ducks and the endangered Laysan Teal and Marble Teal.
If you are lucky you may see a group of ducklings with their mother.
We also have two large aviaries containing Cockatiels and Budgerigars.
Smaller aviaries contain finches, parakeets, macaws and conures. Our tortoises can be found in the finch aviary.
Eckie, our Eclectus Parrot can often be heard mimicking certain sounds and even words!
A big favourite at the zoo is the colony of Humboldt Penguins, especially at feeding time (3pm) where they can be seen swimming for fish in their large pool. The Humboldt Penguin is endangered in the wild but the group breed on a regular basis.
